The museum currently houses monographic collections on medieval ceramics, Pisan painting in the 12th and 13th centuries -including a subsection dedicated to painted crosses- and to painting and sculpture in the 14th and 15th centuries.
The medieval ceramics collection contains the richest set of ceramic basins used to decorate the outside walls of Pisan churches. Painting in the 12th and 13th centuries is represented by the crosses painted by Berlinghiero Berlinghieri, Giunta di Capitino, also known as Giunta Pisano, the Tedice family and the Maestro di San Martino, all coming from the oldest churches in town.
The key role played by illuminations is illustrated by a Bible from the Monastery of San Vito, also known as Bibbia di Calci. Pisan sculpture in the 12th-15th centuries is represented by the beautiful polyptych by Simone Martini, formerly preserved in the Church of Santa Caterina d''Alessandria d''Egitto, by a Nativity by Tino di Camaino, and by a Madonna del Latte (Our Lady of Milk) by the brothers Andrea and Nino Pisano.
Also remarkable are a few wooden works by Francesco di Valdambrino and Agostino di Giovanni. Painting in the 14th and 15th centuries is exemplified by works by Francesco di Traino, Lippo Menni and Buonamico Buffalmacco, noted for his fresco cycle in the Monumental Cemetery, Spinello Aretino, Taddeo di Bartolo and other great painters of the period.
More specifically linked with the 15th century are the works by much better known artists such as Masaccio with his St. Paul, Gentile da Fabriano, Giovanni da Fiesole, known as Beato Angelico, Benozzo di Lese, known as Gozzoli, and Domenico Ghirlandaio. This section also preserves glazed terracottas by the Della Robbia school and Donatello''s bust-relic of St. Lussorio.
